Many times as the installer, I prefer using locomotive adaptor boards, allowing the decoder to be easily removed for programming, in my opinion it also helps keep the wiring organized -
the MS990 series decoders, are available with pins or screw terminals - the version with pins are shipped with a 14-pole socket connector with Crimp connectors (solderable) for AWG22-strands; to plug into large scale decoders with pin connectors MX699LV, MX699LS, MX699LM MS990L
This Locomotive adaptor board allows the person installing the decoder to simply solder directly to the adaptor board, rather than using the 14-pole crimp connectors that are included with the decoder
